It's been two decades since "A Prototype" appeared as a standout track on his ground-breaking full length "Who's Who?" LP in 2001. Anacron's impressively layered rhyme schemes and unusual song structure, paired with DJ Daze's complex turntablism and Alo's (Garden Family Circle) golden-era reminiscent beats formed the perfect representation of underground hip hop of the day. The tune was sought and placed as a key track on Activision's award winning soundtrack to Tony Hawk's Underground, a critically acclaimed breakthrough in gaming and skateboarding culture. Consequently, the song quickly became a skate theme of sorts; a mainstream-denouncing battle-cry for skateboarders who at the time, struggled to find acceptance in the outside world.
Similarly, Anacron's "Boom, Boom!" found it's own pocket of success through a mass of sync placements; including award winning video game Far Cry 3 (Ubisoft), and immensely popular award-winning television shows like Dexter (SHO), True Blood (HBO), and Entourage (HBO), and more. The Old Man Malcolm (Citizen King) produced track, unlike "A Prototype," never saw an official release - appearing only on Anacron and Malcolm's "Cornrowz" tour-edition CDR's. Unbeknownst to most, the unfinished recording was actually a studio outtake - a tongue-in-cheek rough draft freestyle draft for potential future material.
Both tracks receive Anacron's patented "Facelift" treatment here: lyrics re-written, instruments re-played, tracks re-produced, and songs re-recorded for re-release, all in true underground renaissance fashion by the artist himself. What more would you expect from an independent artist, educator, and businessman who's done, and continues to do it all?
